NaNoWriMo 2017

Writing to me, is something that I enjoy doing. Both with a pen and paper, and using a computer and keyboard. NaNoWriMo is something I have attempted for the past couple of years, most successfully in 2016 and 2017. All of my attempts failed due to a decline in my mental health. For example, I was extremely run down with work, and knowing that November was going to be a busy month, that I was too poorly to write for the first four (4) days of the month.

NaNoWriMo is such a wonderful idea and I think that when it comes to getting people writing, it is extremely successful. However, if you are unable to participate, or stop participating, you are still a writer. If you cannot write 1667 words a day, you are still a writer. If you cannot write 50,000 words in 30 days, you are still a writer.

Writing should not impact your mental health in any way. Doing something you want to do, should be a positive thing, and being unable to participate in an event, when there are 11 other months in the year, is not something that should get you down.

If it does, then stop. In 2016 my boyfriend made me stop, and this year I decided that I was going to stop by myself, because it just was not worth it. I do have a story in me, like many of you I imagine, but it will come out of me eventually. Most likely over a period of longer than 30 days.

I am waving with my pom-poms for everyone still writing, and I am proud of everyone who has kept at it/ given it a go/ decided it was not for them etc. Feel free to get in touch and let me know what you think!

26 things I have learnt in my 26 years on Earth

  1. You are never too old for Harry Potter
  2. Tea does not taste any different if you add the milk before or after the water
  3. You cannot please everyone in life, so eat that avocado (I don’t like avocados).
  4. My cats are my world
  5. I am a woman and I do not want kids, and that is okay
  6. smear tests are incredibly uncomfortable but completely necessary
  7. I will never have enough books
  8. Teddy-bears are essential, and have feelings
  9. I would be happy if I never had to leave the house ever again
  10. Making your own cake/cookies means there are no calories if you eat them
  11. Not liking/wanting sex is completely normal
  12. Check those boobs. You never know when it’ll save your life
  13. Blankets. I am a blanket whore
  14. Make tea in bulk (in a flask, thermos, whatever) as it will save so much time
  15. Friends met online are real.
  16. I am panromantic asexual, and my sexuality is valid
  17. Autumn is my favourite season
  18. Rain is my favourite weather when I don’t have to work
  19. Cake can be eaten at any time
  20. You are never too young to fangirl
  21. Read what you want, not what you should
  22. Education is better when you get older
  23. The teen years are the worst years of your life. But life does get better when you also get through your 20s (or I am hoping so anyway…)
  24. Tattoos and dyed hair will not stop you getting that job
  25. Money can definitely buy happiness, and if anyone tells you it can’t has never lived without it.

My NaNoWriMo essentials

It is almost half way through October, and NaNoWriMo is fast approaching. For those of you not familiar, NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month and involves writing 50,000 words over the course of 30 days, and is held during November every year. I have participated since 2014, and have yet to complete the 50,000 goal (but that isn’t stopping me from attempting!).

I have decided to create a post of my writing essentials, in case anyone else is wanting to join in this year, and doesn’t know where to begin.

  1.  A laptop. I don’t know where I would be without mine, and it is portable, unlike a computer, so can be carried anywhere. (even that coffee shop you’ve always wanted to write in).
  2.  A note book or journal and a pen. Laptops are great, but having a pen and paper at hand helps, especially when that Really Important Idea comes to you when you’re on the bus, trying to sleep, or even in the bath.
  3. A flask/thermos. If you’re like me, you forget to drink your hot beverage of choice when it is the correct temperature. I also go too long without drinking, so find that having tea on tap (sort of) helps keep me hydrated, and means I don’t have to waste time making tea that I know I’m not going to drink. If you don’t like hot drinks, then a water bottle would also come in handy.
  4.  Snacks. (see above regarding drinks). An empty stomach makes for a grumpy writer. Feed yourself and you feed your creativity. Food that is easy to prep will also come in handy.
  5.  A blanket/duvet for those days when you’ll be too busy writing to notice you’re cold. I invested in a heated blanket last year and have never looked back.
  6.  Comfortable clothes. I live with generalised anxiety, so I pretty much spend all my free time inside, so live in comfortable clothes/PJs. They make the autumn/winter more bearable, and will be easier to write in.
  7.  Something to fidget with will help when you’re struggling on that plot point or dealing with a character who doesn’t want to do what you want them to.
  8.  Portable phone charger. I have an iphone, and since updating to iOS 11, the battery has been terrible. Keeping in contact with the outside world will keep you sane, and will stop people thinking you’ve fallen off the edge of the world or calling the police when you disappear for 30 days.
  9.  Writing when watching tv shows helps me concentrate. Generally I will binge-watch a series, with Grey’s Anatomy, Supernatural, Buffy, and Charmed being some of my favourites.
  10.  Planner or Pantser, at some point in the month you’re going to acquire information about characters, scenes, and plot points. Keeping them somewhere safe will stop you searching for that one character’s favourite food that you mentioned ten chapters ago.
  11.  Optional: Reading material. 30 days is a long time to spend with the same characters, and other stories will help with inspiration, or even just to get you out of your own head for a while.
  12.  Optional: empty floor. Everything will get too much, and lying on the floor will help.
  13.  Optional: books on how to write. You’ll say you don’t need them, but when it comes to writing, and quite possibly writer’s block, you’ll think you need them to get you through. As someone who has been there and done that, I find it’s easier to get rid of that demon before the month begins, so you’ll be able to kick it to the curb before it gets to you completely.
  14.  Optional: a writing buddy. I’m extremely lucky, because there are two very special people in my life who support my writing. I am thankful that my boyfriend of 5 years has stuck with me through all my bad writing moods and writer’s block. I also have an amazing writing buddy, who is there for me when I’m struggling with a character or scene. My cats also provide constant writing company.
