Ever since being kidnapped from the Illiais Jungle as a child, Yelena Zaltana’s has been fraught with peril. But the recent loss of her Soulfinding abilities has endangered her more than ever before. As she desperately searches for a way to reclaim her magic, her enemies are closing in, and neither Ixia nor Sitia are safe for her anymore. Especially since the growing discord between the two countries and the possibility of a war threatens everything Yelena holds dear.
Valek is determined to protect Yelena, but he’s quickly running out of options. The Commander suspects that his loyalties are divided, and he’s been keeping secrets from Valek…secrets that put him, Yelena and all their friends in terrible danger. As they uncover the various layers of the Commander’s mysterious plans, they realize it’s far more sinister that they could have ever imagined.
Goodreads rating: ✮✮✮✮ (4.25 stars)
My rating: ✮✮✮✮ (4 stars)
Night study continued on from where Shadow Study left off, with Yelena telling Valek the news that she could be pregnant, and dealing with the effects of a potential Ixia/Sitia war. With the twists and turns in Shadow Study, this book was sure to keep the suspense going, and now Snyder keeps pulling more tricks from up her sleeves.
The story itself focuses on Yelena losing her powers, the relationship between Valek and the Commander of Ixia, and the repercussions of Curare and Theobroma being produced outside of the Zaltana clan. There are continuous plot twists included, such as the Commander working with Owen and Ben Moon, and Bruns Jewelrose being part of a Cartel training magicians to fight against Ixia.
Yelena continues to be fearless, even when she is faced with pregnancy, isolation from her lack of magic, as well as the various political issues between the two countries. My amazement with how Yelena copes with everything, and remains positive despite all of the negative aspects going on. I love how Snyder has kept Yelena independent, yet still manages to show that you can be fiercly independent and still have a successful relationship.
This book shows a side to Valek that we haven’t seen before. We find out about his past, and what happens when he eventually returns home. The relationship between himself and the commander is also a thing of intrigue. I am desperate to find out if the hints that Valek and Yelena suspect, are hints, or whether he has just turned to the dark side. I wonder if they have cookies?
There is so much that has gone on in this book, and I understand that Snyder is probably wanting to tie up any lose ends in the Study/Glass/Soulfinder trilogies, but I did feel like I found myself struggling to follow the different story lines. Maybe Snyder should have kept the different plot angles to a minimum and focussed more details on the characters.
I am, however, interested in seeing the finale and how Snyder ties up everything in Dawn Study.
