Storm Glass – Maria V Snyder

As a glassmaker and a magician-in-training, Opal Cowen understands trial by fire. Now it’s time to test her mettle. Someone has sabotaged the Stormdancer clan’s glass orbs, killing their most powerful magicians. The Stormdancers—particularly the mysterious and mercurial Kade—require Opal’s unique talents to prevent it happening again. But when the mission goes awry, Opal must tap in to a new kind of magic as stunningly potent as it is frightening. And the further she delves into the intrigue behind the glass and magic, the more distorted things appear. With lives hanging in the balance—including her own—Opal must control powers she hadn’t known she possessed… – powers that might lead to disaster beyond anything she’s ever known.

Goodreads rating: ✮✮✮✮ (3.95 stars)

My rating: ✮✮✮✮ (3 stars)

The Glass series is centered around Opal Cowan, who helped Yelena trap the souls of the Warper’s, and is written (I think) 5 years after the Study series, which focussed on Yelena’s journey. It involves Opal experimenting with Glass, and making new friends along the way, such as Piecov and Kade.

I felt like I didn’t bond with Opal as much as I have bonded with Yelena, and it is something which has influenced my rating. I find her lack of confidence, and the potential love-triangle, annoying and goes against the strong female character that the study series involved.

There wasn’t as much action in this book compared to what I was used to, and I felt like the book didn’t really go anywhere. I hope to read the next book to see whether the story improves, and I hope my disappointment in this series ends here.

I apologise for the short review – I hope that my next one will have more points and I have more to say.
