Fire Study – Maria V Snyder

The apprenticeship is over—now the real test has begun.

When word that Yelena is a Soulfinder—able to capture and release souls—spreads like wildfire, people grow uneasy. Already Yelena’s unusual abilities and past have set her apart. As the Council debates Yelena’s fate, she receives a disturbing message: a plot is rising against her homeland, led by a murderous sorcerer she has defeated before…

Honor sets Yelena on a path that will test the limits of her skills, and the hope of reuniting with her beloved spurs her onward. Her journey is fraught with allies, enemies, lovers and would-be assassins, each of questionable loyalty. Yelena will have but one chance to prove herself—and save the land she holds dear.

This book is the third book in the study series, and it is one of my favourite books so far. I loved to read about the growing friendship between Yelena and Moon man, even if I felt myself as frustrated as Yelena at times. Yelena has grown so much since Poison study, and I am excited to see how far she is going to go.

The role that Leif plays in this story is important, and I felt happy to see a sibling relationship growing into something positive, and it shows the importance of brothers and sisters, similar to the bond between Yelena, Ari, and Janco, who are also mentioned in this book, and I love that they are still included in Yelena’s life. Valek and Yelena are still as strong as possible, and I am interested in how Snyder will write about their relationship in the Soulfinder trilogy.

I enjoyed the action and the growth in understanding of how choices are important. Yelena believes she is a soul stealer, and is afraid of letting herself understand her gift too much. It is only when she fully immerses herself in her powers that she realises her gifts are not to be feared, but that her gift is something positive.

Ferde is no more, and I was happy when Yelena trapped him with Opal’s help. The idea that Opal can use her power to trap souls with Yelena’s help is interesting, and I look forward to reading about it in the Glass study series.
