With her greatest enemy dead, and on her way to be reunited with the family she’d been stolen from long ago, Yelena should be pleased. But though she has gained her freedom, she can’t help feeling isolated in Sitia. Her Ixian background has changed her in many ways—and her newfound friends and relatives don’t think it’s for the better….

Despite the turmoil, she’s eager to start her magic training—especially as she’s been given one year to harness her power or be put to death. But her plans take a radical turn when she becomes involved with a plot to reclaim Ixia’s throne for a lost prince—and gets entangled in powerful rivalries with her fellow magicians.

If that wasn’t bad enough, it appears her brother would love to see her dead. Luckily, Yelena has some old friends to help her with all her new enemies….

My rating: ✮✮✮✮✮ (5 stars)

I loved this book so much, as it focuses on Yelena, and how she discovers she has a family, as well as finding out where she belongs in the magical part of her life. Learning that she has a family, as well as what happened on the day she was abducted, on top of life in the citadel with the master magicians proves difficult for Yelena at times. She has gone from being independent, and needing to be on her guard all the time, to having a family who is concerned about her, and having new rules to follow during her training with the Master Magicians.

In this book we meet Leif for the first time. Leif is Yelena’s brother, and his emotions for the first time when he sees Yelena are full of hatred. Leif doesn’t trust her, and, to be perfectly honest, Leif is a little shit. He gets her kidnapped as well as almost killed, but towards the end, he turns into the brother Yelena needs, even though they both have a lot to learn.

Yelena started off this journey as a student under Irys, struggling to handle the rules which come with living in the citadel, and ends this journey as a liason between Sitia and Ixia. Yelena goes from being a student, wanting to learn more about her magic and being in control of that part of her, to showing the Master Magicians that she can control her magic, and could help unite Sitia and Ixia.

We still meet Ari, Janco, and Valek, in this book, and they are just as protective over Yelena as they were in the first one. They don’t let the issues of Yelena being magical affect their relationship, despite a character trying to influence how they saw her.

This book has action, adventure, magic, and romance, as well as a couple of new friends that Yelena learns to depend on. It is never a dull moment for Yelena, and this book shows a continuation in her furthering her journey of discovery and finding out her place in this world Snyder has built.

I am excited to dive right into magic study, and see how the world and her journey develops. These books are what I love in a fantasy series, and I am continuously surprised that I hadn’t picked them up since now.
